ASAHIYAKI 朝日焼

A type of pottery produced in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture. Asahiyaki is characterized by its unique red spotted pattern that a appears when fired due to the iron content in the clay used as raw material.

The different types of Asahiyaki are named based on their distinctive features:

Hanshi: This term roughly translates to “pottery fired by the master.” It refers to vessels with coarse red spots that appear scattered on the surface.

Kase: In contrast to Hanshi, Kase describes pottery with a fine-grained spotted pattern. It is named after the pattern resembling the back of a deer.

Benikase: Among Kase pottery, Benikase specifically indicates pieces with a higher iron content, displaying a more vivid crimson coloration.
